What kind of computer should I buy?
The answer to this question varies depending on what you plan on studying. In general:
- Buy as much RAM and disk space as you can. 2G of RAM and 250GB of disk space is a good starting point.
- When creating with a computer an Artist will rely a great deal on the quality of their display, and their work will usually involve a large number of windows and pallets. If your degree involves extensive use of computers (see below) buy the largest screen and the best video card you can afford. This also applies to laptops.
- More technically oriented fields may require their students to carry a lot of storage. Plan on buying a high capacity external hard drive at some point in your college career if your major is listed below.
- Stop by the Techbar for more specific recommendations.
- Animation: PCs are preferred, but most applications are available for both platforms.
- Graphic Design: Macs are preferred, but most applications are available for both platforms.
- Fine Arts + Video Art Emphasis: Macintosh is the way to go.
- Illustration: Macintosh is the way to go. I you decide to pursue computer based illustration you may also invest in a graphics tablet at some point during your college career.
- Interior Design: Windows is the way to go. If you already own a Mac talk to the tech bar about running Windows on Macintosh hardware.
- If your degree isn't listed there aren't specific computer requirements -- buy whatever machine you are most comfortable using.
Some vendors provide large student discounts with proof of enrollment in a degree program. Here are a few sites to get you started:
- Journeyed.com
- Academic Superstore
- Or just ask at your favorite vendor or reseller if they offer an educational discount (Apple, HP, Gateway, etc.)
Every student is given a free RMCAD email account. This account allows you to get all important information regarding classes, financial aid and student activities. Best of all, students can check their email anywhere in the world! As an added bonus, alumni association members can keep their email forever!
